Background information

The HOOU course “Biological Waste Treatment” aims to impart knowledge concerning the realization of CE by planning a biological waste treatment facility. All participants with engineering background are able to develop and explain the design and layout of anaerobic and aerobic waste treatment, describe different techniques for the gas and bio-waste treatment.

Simulation game

The main goal of the simulation game is to plan a biological waste treatment facility for the Biocity. The simulation is carried out within different working groups, which represent a certain consultancy company, different climates and different political and social environments. Overall, each project has to fulfil the following requirements:

  • Support a Circular Economy by Zero Waste Strategy
  • Provide an innovative concept for biological waste treatment following State of the Art Technology
  • Ensure minimum environmental impact by emissions and residues;
  • Guarantee a competitive advantage through cost reductions and improved efficiencies.

Chemical or/and biological basics, Bachelor degree in Engineering or related fields

Capabilities

All participants should be able:

  • To discuss the compilation of design and layout of plants;
  • Critically evaluate techniques and quality control measurements;
  • Search and evaluate literature and data connected to the tasks and plan additional technological steps;
  • To reflect and evaluate findings in the group.

Professional competence

Participants take part in subject-specific and interdisciplinary discussions, develop cooperated solutions and promote the scientific development in form of a simulated European tender. Furthermore, they give and accept professional constructive criticism from other participants as well as competent engineers.

Autonomy

Participants can independently validate knowledge from literature, business or test reports and transform it to the course projects. They are capable, in consultation with supervisors as well as other participants and group members to assess their learning level. Furthermore, they can define targets for new application- or research oriented duties in accordance with the potential social, economic and cultural impact.
